The sunset scale

At what time the sun sets over the White Beach on every day of the season — and how it was calculated.

How it was calculated

The time was calculated by the NOAA Solar Calculator algorithm for the point 40.5924° N, 49.98451° E (the White Beach beach) with a correction for refraction (zenith 90.833°) and the UTC+4 time zone that has been in effect in Azerbaijan all year round since 2016. The possible margin of error is about a minute. This is an astronomical calculation, not the bar's schedule.

The “golden hour” on the site is the last 60 minutes before the calculated sunset; civil twilight is about 31 minutes after sunset, when it is still light.

This is not the bar's schedule

Sunset Bar has not published its own opening hours. The table below answers only the astronomical question “when will the sun set” and says nothing about whether the bar is open at that time. The official hours of the White Beach beach are daily 10:00–19:00 (the beach, the 2026 season).

Two minutes

At the latitude of Baku the solar disk drops below the horizon in about two minutes. After that civil twilight lasts for about another half hour — it is light, but the sun is already gone.

What happens after sunset

The golden hour

The last 60 minutes before sunset: the light is warm and low, the shadows are long. In June this is roughly from 19:14 to 20:14, in September from 17:50 to 18:50.

Civil twilight

About 31 minutes after sunset, until the center of the disk drops 6° below the horizon. You can still leave the lamps off.

The boundaries of the golden hour and of twilight on this page are approximate: they are calculated as fixed offsets from the calculated sunset, not by a separate astronomical calculation of the Sun's altitude.
